Jaume Bosser Artal is a luthier of old plucked string instruments. In 2010 he was a teacher at the Course on the Construction of a Vihuela de Mano, given in Sigüenza and directed by José Luis Romanillos.
His production includes ancient, plucked string instruments and recently also some bowed string instruments.
VIHUELA BASED ON A MOULD BY ROMANILLOS
In this exhibition, Jaume Bosser presents a vaulted back with fluted ribs vihuela built from a mould made by Romanillos, which the master showed him in his workshop in Guijosa (around the year 2000). His model was inspired by an instrument by Belcior Dias (Lisbon 1581, R.C.M., London), but of a larger size.
CHARACTERISTICS: Several quotes of “vihuela de fondo tumbado y acanalado” appear on several early workshop inventories found by Marian Harris and José Luis Romanillos in their extensive research in historical archives. These were expensive and not common instruments. A vaulted back with fluted ribs resists better cracking caused by excessive drynessedad.
